Beethoven String Quartets
19 May 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
| R100 – R140The Endler Concert Series presents the Beethoven String Quartet project on Friday 19 May at 20h00 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch. This project, in which the quartet of David Juritz (first violin), Suzanne Martens (second violin), Karin Gaertner (viola) and Peter Martens (cello) plans to perform all of the Beethoven String Quartets, was conceived when these fine South African artists came together to perform as a quartet for the first time in 2013. Their critically acclaimed performance of Beethoven’s first “Razumovsky” quartet sparked the idea of performing all of Beethoven’s string quartets and the first concert was held in the Endler hall in May 2015.
David lives in London and is regarded as one of the most versatile violinists currently working in the UK. He divides his time between solo performances, directing, chamber music, working as guest leader with many of Britain’s finest orchestras and leading his own group, the London Tango Quintet.
Apart from the ‘Beethoven String Quartet Project’, Karin, Suzanne and Peter are also members of the Amici String Quartet and need no introduction to local audiences.
For this concert the quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartets Op. 18, no. 1; Op. 135 and Op. 59, no 3. No series of works by Beethoven better epitomises what we think of as his ‘early’, ‘middle’ and ‘late’ periods than the string quartets, and this evening’s programme contains a representative example from each.
