The Cape Chamber Music Collective, a passion project put together by a group of South African musicians, has recently launched their concerts in and around Cape Town. “Summer Nights” is their second project, the title of the concert inspired by the music they will perform. Barber’s Summer Music for Wind Quintet is his only work for such an ensemble. Originally sketched for a septet of winds and strings, it evolved into a work for Wind Quintet which is both lyrical and whimsical. The soundscape is unmistakably American, incorporating Barber’s lyricism and Gershwin’s Jazz influences. Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été was originally written for voice and piano, and later arranged with orchestral accompaniment, so it is only fitting that an arrangement for voice and Wind Quintet exists as part of the Wind Quintet repertoire. One of Berlioz’s most popular works, it draws its inspiration from the Romantic poetry about life, by Théophile Gautie, with all its ups and downs. Also on the programme is a world premiere of a work by South African jazz pianist, Paul Hanmer, commissioned by the Cape Chamber Music Collective. Performers include Lynelle Kenned (soprano), Liesl Stoltz (flute), Joshua Frank (oboe), Shannon Thebus (horn), Cameron Williams (clarinet), Brandon Phillips (bassoon).

Please keep in mind that for all live events current restrictions allow for 150 audience members in the Endler Hall and all safety protocols outlined by the University will be strictly followed.

Tickets for R140 (regular) and R100 (pensioners, students, and scholars) are available now through Computicket and at the door one hour before the show. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358. Please visit www.capechambercollective.com for more information.
