This concert is dedicated to the late Peter Klatzow, one of South Africa’s most celebrated composers, who was a student of Nadia Boulanger at the Paris Conservatoire. Klatzow shared the same musical upbringing with such notable composers such as Aaron Copland and Astor Piazzolla. The Cello and Piano Sonata is a beautifully lyric, positively energetic and fun work that should take its place among every cellist’s repertoire. Also on the programme is Beethoven’s Horn Sonata, originally written for the horn virtuoso Giovanni Punto. Beethoven arranged this sonata for the cello, making it a wonderful addition to Beethoven’s other five agile and powerful sonatas for piano and cello. To close the programme, Brahms’ second Cello Sonata is lyrical, fiery, passionate, and hauntingly beautiful. Principal cellist of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, Peter Martens needs no introduction to local audiences. Award winning pianist, Megan-Geoffrey Prins currently serves as full-time piano lecturer on the faculty of the University of Pretoria: School of the Arts and was listed among the one hundred most notable graduates from Stellenbosch University during the university’s centennial celebrations.

Please keep in mind that for all live events current restrictions allow for 150 audience members in the Endler Hall and all safety protocols outlined by the University will be strictly followed.

Tickets for R140 (regular) and R100 (pensioners, students, and scholars) are available now through Computicket and at the door one hour before the show. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
