The University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble (USSWE) collaborates with the South African National Saxophone Symposium to present a concert on Saturday 31 August at 3pm in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

The concert will be conducted by Flemish guest conductor, Rik Ghesquière, co-founder and conductor of the Flemish-Brabant Symphony Orchestra, a member of the trumpet section of the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor of the Brussel Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The performance commences with Fanfare followed by Let the Good Times Roll both by Honorary Professor of Composition at the Africa Open Institute, Michael Blake, the latter work composed for this concert.  The Youth of Africa Suite, for solo saxophone and wind band, was commissioned by the SA Saxophone Society for the symposium and is composed by William Haubrich, Head of Brass studies at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. USSWE’s performance will conclude with the challenging Dark Rain, a concerto for two saxophones and wind orchestra, by Andy Scott, which incorporates a variety of musical styles including classical, jazz and avant garde. The two soloists will be Matthew Lombard who recently completed his doctoral studies at the University of California, Los Angelos, and Liam Burden, conductor and Head of Woodwinds at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and resident saxophone lecturer at the Music Department, Stellenbosch University. WindWorx Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Rik Ghesquière will also be performing at this concluding concert of the 2019 SA National Saxophone Symposium.
