The annual Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, now in its 35th edition, has undoubtedly become one of the highlights of the SA music calendar for the youngest prodigies. The competition is the brainchild of Professor Hubert van der Spuy, former chairman of the South African Society of Music Teachers (Tygerberg Branch), and one of the legendary SA music educators. The US Music Department is proud to be a co-host of the competition for the first time this year alongside the SASMT.

This instrumental competition is currently the only one of its kind in South Africa, offering a unique opportunity for children aged 13 years and younger to compete against their peers from across the nation. Several previous winners of the competition have not only gone on to tertiary music studies, but have become critically acclaimed performers and educators themselves. On occasion some have even returned to the competition as members of the adjudicating panel or taught many of the younger generations of prizewinners.
Entry is free for all the events leading up to the Final Round Gala Concert, when 8 finalists compete for top honours, and for which tickets can be booked through webtickets.
