The Endler Concert Series is delighted to welcome Magdalena de Vries, South Africa’s foremost classical marimbist, back to the Endler. In 2021 Magdalena’s planned solo recital in the Endler was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

Magdalena is a regular presence in all major concert halls and Arts Festivals in South Africa and has won all the major South African music prizes and international scholarships. After obtaining performer’s licentiate diplomas (with distinction) from both the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and the University of South Africa, two of the most prestigious South African overseas music scholarships were awarded to her and enabled her to pursue postgraduate studies in percussion as the first foreign student at the Tokyo College of Music under Professor Atsushi Sugahara.

In this recital, Magdalena explores the textural blends and contrasts between wood and metal by combining exotic percussion instruments (including tuned cowbells and terracotta pots) with her concert marimba in her latest solo programme. The programme features works by South African composers Lise Morrison, Clare Loveday and Kayode Ibaiyo that were all commissioned by Magdalena.

Tickets for R150 (regular), R110 (pensioners 60 years +) and R50 (students and scholars) are available now through Webtickets and at the door one hour before the concert. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
