Megan-Geoffrey Prins Piano Recital
12 March 2017 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
| R100 – R130The Woordfees in collaboration with the Endler Concert Series presents the South African pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins. Prins represents the finest of South Africa’s next-generation concert pianists. His masterful stage presence and success at numerous competitions has earned him a reputation as a pianist of remarkable technical facility and abundant musicality.
The first half of the concert will include Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata and
Rzewski’s Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues. In the second half, Prins will perform Lyapounov’s Etudes d`Exécution Transcendante. Franz Liszt’s composition of Transcendental Études began in 1826 – his original idea was to write 24 études, one in each of the 24 major and minor keys. He completed only half of this project, using the neutral and flat key signatures. In 1897–1905 the Russian composer Sergei Lyapunov wrote his own set of Douze études d’exécution transcendante, Op. 11, choosing only those keys that Liszt had omitted, namely the sharp keys, to “complete” the full set of 24.
This is a programme one would expect from a mature seasoned virtuoso, and expectation is high that the young Prins will dazzle with musicality beyond his years.
Megan-Geoffrey is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he recently completed the Master of Music programme as a piano student of Antonio Pompa-Baldi. Prins received his BMus degree from Stellenbosch University under the tutelage of Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhães.
