Mozart’s Requiem
25 March 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
| R100 – R140The Endler Concert Series presents Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor on Saturday 24 March at 20h00 and Sunday 25 March at 16h30 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch. This timeless masterpiece will be performed by Canticum Novum together with the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra (USSO) under the baton of Louis van der Watt with vocal soloists from the SU Singing Division.
This year marks the 21st consecutive year that Canticum Novum Choir will be performing sacred works for Choir and Orchestra. Canticum Novum, meaning “New Song”, is a choir specializing in sacred music. It is one of the oldest choirs in South Africa consisting mainly of students and young working people. Canticum Novum is unique in that its repertoire consists exclusively of sacred music and because of the exceptional standard of their Requiem performances the choir was invited to perform in the Carnegie Hall, New York in 2014.
The Requiem was Mozart’s final composition and remained unfinished at the time of his death. Mozart’s wife, Constanze, was determined to have the score completed and asked various people to undertake the task. One of Mozart’s students, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, completed the Requiem in February 1792. Despite its fragmentary origins, the Requiem is profoundly moving and remains one of Mozart’s most beloved and enduring works.
Be sure not to miss this extraordinary feast of young talent and exquisite sacred music.
Tickets for R140 (regular) and R100 (students and pensioners) are available now through Computicket and at the door.
