The Endler Concert series is proud to present the Stellenbosch University Choir on Saturday the 6 May at 20h00 and Sunday 7 May at 16h30 in the Endler Hall. At this special gala concert they will launch their latest album entitled Shadows and Wings.
The Stellenbosch University Choir is one of the oldest and most celebrated choirs in South Africa and is comprised of students from various academic and cultural backgrounds creating an intoxicating energy in the performances. Under the leadership and direction of André van der Merwe the choir has achieved worldwide acclaim at the World Choir Games in China (2010), Cincinnati (2012), Latvia (2014) where the choir won with the highest mark in the history of the competition: 99%! Most recently at the World Choir Games, in Sochi, Russia, in 2016 the choir again won all three of their competition categories, achieving the highest mark of the competition with 96%. Currently the US choir is ranked number 1 on the Interkultur World Ranking List of the top 1000 international choirs.
According to the choir’s conductor André van der Merwe, three compositions will receive their South African premiere: The Witch by Hideki Chiara (Japan); A Drop in the Ocean & Heaven’s Flock – both by Eriks Esenvalds (Latvia). On the lighter side the choir will present new arrangements of a few popular songs: Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, Roland Orzabal’s Mad World, Ed Sheeran’s Photograph and Joshua na die Reën’s Sekelmaan & Vir Altyd. The rest of the programme comprise an exciting array of choral works that will appeal to a broad audience.
