Robert Schumann (1810-56) is one of the most loved and imaginative piano music composers of the Romantic period. Often misunderstood during his lifetime, the very works that initially puzzled 19-century audiences now stand amongst the most popular staples of the modern concert repertoire. By contrast, some works deliberately geared towards the appreciation of his contemporaries now stand in comparative oblivion. Renowned South African pianist, Pieter Grobler, has long been fascinated by this composer, and takes this opportunity to devote an entire programme to his works. In this recital, the audience will enjoy two of the great masterpieces of the Romantic piano repertoire (the Carnaval Op.9 and the Fantasy Op.17), complemented by lesser-known songs transcribed at a later stage life by the expert hand of Franz Liszt, together with other treasures. The audience is given a unique and varied glimpse into the inexhaustible riches of Schumann’s piano music.
