Resident musical director, Corvin Matei conducts the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra (USSO) in a programme that includes acclaimed virtuosic flautist, Raffaele Trevisani. Trevisani studied with Sir James Galway who regards him as “…one of the best flautists of the day for his beautiful singing tone, perfect technique and dedication to the art of music..”. This not-to-be-missed concert takes place on Friday 3 March at 20h00 in the Endler Hall.

The programme begins with Khachaturian’s Concerto for violin and orchestra in a transcription of the work for the flute. The numerous challenging technical demands add towards the concerto’s position as one of the most prominent works in the genre.

Following interval, the students of the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 2 in c minor entitled “Little Russian”. The use of folk tunes from rural Russia, cast in the form of a four-movement work proved to be immensely successful. Except for some darker moments in the first movement, a joyful mood pervades all movements, and the composer’s excellent sense of attractive melodies and scoring ensure the work’s lasting success.
