US Jazz Band In celebration of Women’s Day
8 August 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
| R30 – R80The Endler Concert Series in partnership with the Stellenbosch University Transformation office and the Women’s Forum present a concert in celebration of Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 August at 20h00 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.
The evening weaves together through jazz music, visual art and poetry the stories and celebration of women. The Stellenbosch University Jazz Band take centre stage under the direction of Felicia Lesch joined by jazz legend Gloria Bosman and jazz singer and poet Mihi-Tuwi Matshingana.
In particular the evening honours Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – the first South African black woman to journey to tertiary education, graduating in the USA in 1901. Her mantra ”When you rise, lift someone up with you” is an admonition that artists Felicia Lesch, Gloria Bosman and Mihi-Tuwi Matshingana all embrace. Felicia is passionate about music as a vehicle for social change and formed the SU Jazz Band as one of the ensembles of the Certificate Programme. The Certificate Programme is the pre-undergraduate programme of the SU Music Department which was created to equip members of the broader community with skills to read music and play an instrument at a level enabling them to embark on a BMus or Diploma programme at tertiary level.
South African author and journalist Zubeida Jaffer’s 3rd published book ”Beauty of the heart” – a tribute to Charlotte Maxeke and compelling book brings fresh data to light on her life will also be available for purchase in the foyer alongside an exhibition of the Visual Arts Department students.
The SU Jazz Band has never failed to captivate audiences, and over the years has gained a reputation for vibrant and energetic performances.
Be sure not to miss this evening of celebration and young talent.
