USSO Hans Roosenschoon Celebration Gala Concert
30 September 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
| R100 – R140The Endler Concert Series is proud to present the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Corvin Matei on Saturday 30 September at 20h00 at the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.
The concert pays tribute to South African composer Hans Roosenschoon with the performance of his work Vier Gebede with acclaimed mezzo soprano Jolene Aret Kappis. Also on the programme is Brahms` Haydn Variations and after the interval the student orchestra is sure to delight with Brahms’ much-loved Symphony No.3.
Orchestral works form the larger part of Roosenschoon’s output for which he has received numerous commissions from the most significant commissioning bodies in South Africa. Apart from many performances throughout this country, his music has been played and broadcast internationally. Although composed in 2004, this performance will be the premiere of Roosenschoon’s Vier Gebede. Soloist, Jolene Aret Kappis, is working towards a PhD on Prof Roosenschoon’s vocal music.
From 1998–2006 Hans Roosenschoon was the Chair of the Music Department at Stellenbosch University (SU). Since his retirement as Chair, he devoted his attention towards the inauguration of a course in composition and orchestration. In 2008 he was instrumental in establishing the Composition specialist direction at under- and postgraduate level at SU. This course is now regarded as one of the finest of its kind in SA. This year, 2017, will be his last year in the Music Department as he takes full retirement from a long career in academia. Hans Roosenschoon has also made important contributions to cultural life in other areas: as a broadcaster and music producer, as an arts administrator and promoter of South African music, as an adjudicator at national competitions and, for 15 years, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO).
Tickets for R140 (regular) and R100 (students and pensioners) are available now through Computicket and at the door. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
