| R100 – R140The Endler Concert Series presents cellist Zuill Bailey and pianist Bryan Wallick on Friday 27 October at 20h00 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.
Zuill Bailey, widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, is a Grammy Award winning, internationally renowned soloist, recitalist, Artistic Director and teacher. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry and engaging personality have secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today. He will be accompanied by the American born pianist Bryan Wallick, lauded by critics as “virtuoso, brilliant and intense”.
The concert will open with the lively popular Baroque master Boccherini’s Sonata in C Major. Then follows Beethoven’s Sonata No. 4, Op.102 no.1 – a lively and energetic work, full of the rhythmic and melodic vitality one expects of Beethoven’s music. Bailey then turns to Piatigorsky’s Variations on a Paganini Theme, composed for and dedicated to various famous musicians. Artists portrayed in these inventive musical sketches include pre-eminent cellist Pablo Casals, composer Paul Hindemith, violinists Joseph Szigeti and Fritz Kreisler and the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz.
Following the intermission, the concert closes with Grammy Award winning composer Michael Daugherty’s newest Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, “Tales of Hemingway.” The concerto brings four classic novels and stories by Ernest Hemingway to life in music. Zuill Bailey worked together with Mr. Daugherty on the development of the new concerto and played its world premiere in 2015.
