The University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble (USSWE) celebrates Stellenbosch University’s centennial and National Heritage Day on Saturday 22 September at 3pm at the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

The marching and community band idiom, so prevalent in the Western Cape, has created, perhaps more than any other musical medium, the opportunity to involve a diverse spectrum of amateur and professional musicians in an all‐inclusive musical initiative.

The University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble will share the afternoon with the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, WindWorx Symphonic Wind Ensemble and choirs from the e-Bosch Primary School Choir Festival.

The concert will commence with the CPYWE, under the baton of Dr. Stephanus (Faan) Malan, former conductor of USSWE, performing a selection of works including Pictures of South Africa, Hidas, Colonial Song, Grainger, Parade of the Tall Ships, Chattaway and Jitterbug, Buckley

Windworx’s performance, directed by Sean Kierman, Faan Malan and Riaan van Wyk, respectively, will include March, op. 99 by Prokofiev.

The performance by the University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the batons of Pamela Kierman and Faan Malan, will feature 1st year BMus French horn student, Carin Donson, in Serenade for horn, Milner, Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual, Smith, Miss Saigon, Schönberg, and will end with A Song for Mandela, Allun Francis, featuring tenor solo, primary school choirs (from the recent e-Bosch Primary Schools Choir Festival), rhythm section and wind band.

The performance will conclude with a massed Wind Ensemble including many SU alumni and community partners on stage, conducted by Faan Malan.

To celebrate in true South African style, boerewors rolls and drinks will be on sale before the event and during the interval.

Tickets for R60 (regular) and R40 (students and pensioners) are available now through Computicket and at the door. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
