The Endler Concert Series, along with the KOMPOS student initiative, celebrates the world premiere of a riveting art song collection produced and performed by the Stellenbosch Music Department composition and singing divisions, in collaboration with the University’s African languages department. As its name suggests (Compost), KOMPOS seeks to establish a nurturing and stimulating environment for the composition students of the Stellenbosch University Music Department. The project instigated in 2010 by Antoni Schonken, Arthur Feder and Tricia Theunissen under the guidance and support of Prof Hans Roosenschoon, strives to create a platform of opportunities to composers, conductors, and performers alike.

Contemporary South African texts in various languages, exemplifying the artistry of local cultural output, inspire the diverse programme for this concert. KOMPOS hopes to establish a lasting and fruitful collaboration between these departments and in so doing, provide a platform in which the creation and performance of new music rooted in an entirely South African ethos, can be explored.

The first half of the concert will feature the short programme in its entirety, followed by a brief discussion surrounding the works, after which the programme will be repeated. Audience members will thus be given the unique opportunity to peer into the creative process of young South African poets, composers and performers alike, experiencing the art songs in light of this during the second half.

We look forward to this exciting musical event!

The concert takes place on Saturday 20 October at 20h00 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

Tickets for R60 (regular) and R40 (students and pensioners) are available now through Computicket and at the door. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
