The vocal division of Stellenbosch University and the UCT Opera School are proud to collaborate in a performance of Schubert’s iconic song cycle, Winterreise (Winters Journey).

The song cycle, with poems by Wilhelm Müller, depicts a man’s path through a physical and psychological landscape of snow, ice and cold. His struggle to find rest and his state of mind are captured in 24 gripping tones that move back and forth from joy to hope to hopelessness. The cycle ends with the lament of a beggar playing his monotonous revolving organ in the cold.

Twelve singers from each institution will sing one of the songs, and direct another singer in the staging of another of the songs. Schubert’s rich emotional landscape will be laid bare musically and dramatically in an educational project which places the communication of thought and emotion at the forefront of every young singer’s work. The students will be accompanied by pianist and conductor, and also the Director of the UCT Opera School, Jeremy Silver. The performance is directed by well-known opera and stage director, Christine Crouse.

Performances take place at the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch on Thursday 15th April at 7:30pm and at the Baxter Concert Hall, Cape Town on Friday 16th April at 7:30pm. Entrance is free of charge but booking is necessary to reserve your seat. Please contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or call on 082 539 6025 for more information.
