Lynn Rudolph (altviool) & José Dias (klavier)

Juis as gevolg van die ryker en donkerder toon is die altviool ‘n spesiale teëbeeld van die viool. Hierdie kwaliteit het ‘n verskeidenheid van komponiste geïnspireer tot die daarstelling van ‘n unieke repertorium in eie reg. Altviolis  Lynn Rudolph en pianis José Dias het ‘n uitnemende rogram saamgestel van selde gehoorde werke vir die altviool-en-klavierduo.

Vir meer as sewe dekades was die naam van die Franse komposisie- ene teorieleermeester Nadia Boulanger sinoniem met die room van kunsmusiekkomponiste van die eerste helfte van die 20ste eeu. Haar invloed op die loopbaane van komponiste, dirigente en instrumentaliste was blywend. Meervoudig begaafd, was Boulanger die eerste vrou wat van die voorste orkeste gelei het, daaronder beide die Londense en New Yorkse Filharmoniese Orkeste. Alhoewel sy haar kompositoriese vaardighede onderskat het, was sy onder meer ‘n finais van die prestigeryke Prix de Rome. Haar Trois Pièces on die  program is ‘n goeie voorbeeld en getuie van haar vaardighede – iets wat uiteenlopende musiekskeppers soos Boulez, Gershwin, Strawinski, Copland en Quincy Jones blywend bygebly het.

Soos in die geval van ander komponis-soliste soos Paganini en Sarasate, is die altviool prominent in die werk van Rebecca Clarke, wat sy vir eie gebruik of vir die vroulike ensembles waarvan sy lid was, nagelaat het.  Sy was ook van die eerste professionele vroulike  orkesmusici. Haar altvioolsonate word beskou as een van haar beste werke, en het gelei tot haar aanwysing as wenner (saam met Ernst Bloch) van die Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Kompetisie van 1919.  Lyn Rudolph se program slut ook Sebastian Bach se Prelude-en-Allegro in, sowel as Hendrik Hofmeyr se Amar(tan)go in.

Lynn Rudolph het die BMus-graad in 2017 aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch behaal, en het reeds etlike pryse tot haar krediet. Sy het die Xenia Internasionale Kamermusiekkursus in Italië bygewoon, en in dieselfde jaar ‘n internasionale beurs van die Stellenbosse Internasionale Kamermusiekfees ontvang,, ten einde meesterklasse aan die Manhattan Musiekskool in New York, die Estman Musiekskool en die Bard-kollege  te kon bywoon. In 2018 het sy ‘n strykerskursus in Bologna, en ‘n internasionale altvioolkursus in Iznik, Turkye, bygewoon. Sy was in 2019 die wenner van die plaaslike Mabel Quick Buitelandse Beurskompetisie. Tans is sy ‘n meestersgraadstudent aan die Nelson Mandela Universiteit in Port Elizabeth.

Die Portugees-gebore José Dias is ‘n bekende in die konsertsale en kunsfeeste in Suid-Afrika. Hy het onlangs opgetree in Portugal, Mozambiek, Israel, Switserland, België, Oostenryk, Nederland en Duitsland. José Dias obtained het die BMus-Hons.-graad (Klaviervoordrag) cum laude aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch behaal, en die Konzertdiplom aan die Hochschule für Muzik und Theater in Zürich, eweneens met onderskeiding.

Die konsert word uitgesaai op Sondag 15 November om 4nm, en sal aanlyn beskikbaar wees tot  Sondag 22 November.

Kunstenaars:

Lynn Rudolph graduated with BMus from Stellenbosch University in 2017 and is a prize-winner of several competitions winning the Mabel Quick prize for the best instrumentalist, runner up at the national UNISA competition for top achievers and also received the “Hennie Joubert Vriendekring” cash prize. Lynn has attended the Xenia International Chamber Music Course in Italy, Torino and in the same year was the recipient of the SICMF International Scholarship which enabled her to attend masterclasses in New York from lecturers from Manhattan School of Music, Eastman school of music and Bard College, among others. In 2018, Lynn attended a string course in Italy, Bologna and an International Viola Course in Iznik, Turkey. In 2019 Lynn was the winner of the Mabel Quick Overseas Bursary Competition Lynn Rudolph is currently an MMus student at Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth.

Portuguese-born José Dias is a regular presence in all major concert halls and Arts Festivals in South Africa. In recent seasons, international performances have taken him to Portugal, Mozambique, Israel, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, including extensive tours of the Netherlands and Germany, with repeated appearances in such historic halls as the Berliner Philharmonie, Münchner Philharmonie, Beethovenhalle in Bonn, Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, among many others.

José is in high demand as soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist and coach, and has also been the musical director of Cape Town Opera’s internationally acclaimed touring productions African Angels and African Passion, as well as Biblioteek Productions’ operatic productions such as Poskantoor, La Voix Humaine and The Recycled Magic Flute. Recently he also wrote new music and took the musical direction of Piekniek by Mpande, a modern day reimagining of the seminal Afrikaans protest cabaret Piekniek by Dingaan as well as the 2019 Fleur du Cap Awards Ceremony, at the Artscape Opera House. These productions and his involvement therein, have made him the recipient of several awards, from festivals such as Woordfees, KKNK, Aardklop, as well as Fiësta and Fleur du Cap Awards.

He was co-creator and curator of the RISE concert series in collaboration with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra – a platform for the display of young SA classical talent – and is also an avid supporter of contemporary music, having premiered several works by composers such as Hendrik Hofmeyr, Alexander Johnson and Conrad Asman. Many of these (some written especially for him) have been recorded and are available on CD.
