The Endler Concert Series in partnership with the Stellenbosch University Transformation office and the Women’s Forum present a concert in celebration of Women’s Day on Wednesday 8 August at 20h00 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

The Stellenbosch University Jazz Band take centre stage under the direction of Felicia Lesch joined by South African jazz icon Gloria Bosman, jazz rising star, Babalwa Mentjies and former Certificate Programme music student Zinzi Carolissen. Zinzi is currently studyiing at the Berkely College of Music in Boston.

In particular the evening honours and celebrates the centennial of Albertina Sisulu. Ma Sisulu, as she was affectionately known throughout her lifetime by the South African public, was a political activist and nurse and one of the most important leaders of anti-Apartheid resistance in South Africa. She acted on her ideal of human rights throughout her life, assisted by her husband and fellow activist, the late Walter Sisulu.

Felicia Lesch is passionate about music as a vehicle for social change and formed the SU Jazz Band as one of the ensembles of the Certificate Programme. The Certificate Programme is the pre-undergraduate programme of the SU Music Department which was created to equip members of the broader community with skills to read music and play an instrument at a level enabling them to embark on a BMus or Diploma programme at tertiary level.

Stellenbosch University Jazz Band has never failed to captivate audiences, and over the years has gained a reputation for vibrant and energetic performances, the most recent being their concert with Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman, Amanda Strydom and Timothy Moloi during the Woordfees 2018 festival. This year they were also awarded with a Fiësta Award for Best Outdoor Music Performance.

Be sure not to miss this evening of celebration and young talent.
